reWRITING THE INDIE CONSTITUTION

Saturday, June 13, 2009

Hello? Where've you been?

I wasn't intending on adding anything much to this blog.
Just got so bored of it.

BUT.

I just put together a podcast for the Anorak Forum after discussing "Awkward" music, so I thought it might be nice to share it here too.

Right then.

I couldn't decide on a downloadable compilation type thing or a podcast.
So I went with a podcast (easier than trying to arrange the comp and re-tag everything).
If you'd prefer a comp so's you can listen to individual songs let me know.
Also, if you know how to arrange podcasts so that individual songs can be played rather than one long mix please let me know! (I've had GarageBand for a long time but never really used it before, so this might all be a bit clunky as I'm learning as I go).

Also:

1. there are probably some glaring omissions.
2. I was very temped to stick some old Two Tone songs on it as there's a real link (to my ears) between that and the scratched guitars of Dog Faced Hermans for example.
3. Most of the songs will be a bit clicky and scratchy as, with the old xPQwRtz compilations, most of the songs are from my old records.
4. It's not strictly in chronological order, though it is more or less. Some of the songs sat better in the positions I've put them. Yes, I actually thought this through and everything (and even though I titled it 79-95, there's a song or two from 96. So shoot me).
5. Enjoy!

Hello sir, only just got 'round to checking this mix out & IT'S MADE ME A VERY HAPPY BLOKE. There's a particular song on there, "Trini Lopez" by Yeah Yeah Noh, that I've been trying to find for YEARS (it's the missing piece in the YYN canon really isn't it?). I taped it off of Peel way back when & inevitably misplaced the cassette - I was seriously beginning to suspect I'd imagined the whole thing tbh, so thanks for clarifying it's existance (it's a great song too, God knows why they left it off that comp of their's a few years back?). If there's any chance of you posting this bijou wee gem in it's own right at some point please let me know c/o my blog or summut, I'd really appreciate it!

P.S. Old news now but, yessssss, Bob Stanley & co's rebranding of C-86 as "twee" does rankle somewhat. I saw MOST of the bands on there at some point & remember a lot of 'em being abrasive, chaotic & full of post-punk attitude - certainly not the type of folk you'd find yourself trading hairgrip trivia with (thank God Hello Kitty wasn't around then, otherwise I'd probably have ended up murdering somebody!). One glaring omission from that era though - the amazing Tools You Can Trust, do you remember them? One of my favourites bands of that ilk & virtually forgotten by the looks of it, very sad...

Hello mate, I'd be indebted to you if you could find time to e-mail me an mp3 of the fabulous A Witness's 'Camera' track. Fell in love with that the first time I heard it played live in Camden Dingwalls far too long ago.
    E-mail addy is mikebellwood[at}aol.com
